Why Enable MTD for Self Assessment Through Acting Office?

From April 2026, HMRC will extend the Making Tax Digital (MTD) programme to Self Assessment for individuals with qualifying self-employment and property income. This change is part of HMRC’s wider initiative to modernise the UK tax system by requiring digital record-keeping and reporting using MTD-compatible software.

Access Self Assessment Section

Navigate to the APCT Module, choose individual from the dropdown, select your client, & open the MTD Tax Returns section.

Update ITSA taxpayer details

Click the edit icon near Taxpayer Information to input or modify the necessary information.

Enable MTD

Click the ‘MTD for ITSA (Income Tax Self Assessment)’ button located on the right side of the MTD Tax Return screen.

Redirect to HMRC

You'll be redirected to the official HMRC website. Click 'Continue' to proceed.

Sign in to HMRC

On the “What You'll Need” screen, click 'Sign in to HMRC online services'.

Enter Credentials

Use your Self Assessment online account User ID and Password to log in.

Grant Permission

Click 'Give Permission' to authorise Acting Office to interact with HMRC on your behalf.

Confirmation

Once authorised, a green tick mark will appear on the MTD Tax Return screen-confirming MTD has been successfully enabled.

MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) - HMRC Compliance

1. Mandatory rollout

MTD for ITSA will apply based on your gross qualifying income (Self-Employment + property income before expenses) from the 2024/25 tax year:

  • From 6 April 2026 - Income over £50,000
  • From 6 April 2027 - Income over £30,000
  • From 6 April 2028 - Income over £20,000 (planned)
2. Key Compliance Requirements

Once mandated, you must:

  • Keep digital records
    Maintain income and expense records using HMRC-compatible software (or spreadsheets with bridging software).
  • Submit quarterly updates
    Send income and expense summaries every 3 months.
  • Submit final declaration
    By 31 January following the tax year to confirm total income and finalise tax liability.
3. Penalties
  • Late Submissions
    A £200 penalty applies once the points limit is reached (e.g., 4 for quarterly, 2 for annual filers).
  • Grace Period
    No penalty points for missed quarterly updates in 2026/27, but late annual returns will still attract points.
  • Record Keeping
    Failure to keep digital records or maintain “digital links” using compatible software shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding £3,000, as determined by HMRC.
